What is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause, marking the end of our reproductive years. During this time, you may experience symptoms such as irregular periods, mood swings, and sleepless nights.

It’s important to recognize that menopause is not just a single event that occurs in our 50s; it starts with perimenopause, a gradual transition that can last anywhere from a few months to over a decade.

As a woman and a mother in my 30s, I believe it’s vital for us to stay informed about our health so we can navigate this journey with confidence.

Ways to Prioritise Women Health During Perimenopause

Armed with knowledge on what to expect, we can better manage the changes around us.

1. Focus on Eating Right

Busy lifestyles can lead us to neglect our nutrition. A balanced diet is vital during this time. Here are some tips to eat more mindfully:

  • Get enough Calcium and Vitamin D for bone health, reduce the risk of osteoporosis, as women are more susceptible than men.
  • Include phytoestrogen-rich foods such as soy products, flaxseeds, and legumes, which can help balance hormones.
  • Eat healthy fats like Omega-3 from fatty fish and avocados to support heart health.
  • Cut down on sugar and refined carbs to manage weight and stabilize energy levels. With 1 in 3 Singaporeans with a lifetime risk of developing diabetes.

Remember, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”

2. Stay Active

Exercise not only helps to improve overall health but can also help manage perimenopausal symptoms like mood swings, weight gain and improve sleep. As we age, our metabolism slows down and that’s also why many women in their 30s to 40s notice weight gain and feel more sluggish than before. In turn, this affects appearance and confidence.

Consider incorporating:

Cardio workouts for heart health.

Strength training to maintain muscle and bone density.

Yoga or Pilates for flexibility and balance.

If you’re starting a new exercise routine, consult your doctor, especially if you have health concerns. Even a quick 15-minute walk or quick free home workout can make a difference. I often squeeze in a short run after dropping my son off at school, and it really helps keep me energized.

3. Regular Health Screenings

Monitoring our health is crucial during perimenopause. Regular health checkups can help catch any potential issues early, like thyroid imbalances or blood pressure changes.

Don’t ignore any unusual aches or lumps; get them checked out. Speak to your doctor about necessary screenings for osteoporosis, breast cancer, and heart health, especially as we approach our 40s. Women from 40 years old and above are recommended to go for a mammogram since breast cancer is the number one cancer for women in Singapore.

Financial Considerations During Perimenopause Phase

By planning ahead for future medical costs and making sure your retirement savings are on track, you’ll find it easier to face this chapter of life with confidence.

1. Health insurance and medical costs in Singapore

Taking care of your health becomes a priority during perimenopause. Have you checked if your health insurance covers everything you need? It’s a good idea to review your policy to make sure it includes regular check-ups, access to specialists (like gynaecologists and endocrinologists), and treatments related to women’s health. Not sure what your plan covers? Speak with a financial advisor to clarify.

Jenelle’s health insurance tips for Singaporeans: Look at your medical insurance and consider upgrades if needed. Whether it’s enhancing your CareShield Life plan or allocating funds for wellness programs, having the right coverage means you can focus on your health without worrying about the cost.

2. Long-Term Financial Planning for Women

Like a health screening, do you know how to do a financial check-up for yourself? Planning ahead can provide peace of mind when unexpected expenses arise. Use this opportunity to take a close look at your long-term financial goals.

Thinking about investing but unsure where to begin? Start by dispelling common myths about investing. This will give you more confidence to create an investment strategy that feels right for you.

Jenelle’s life planning advice: Understand the importance of having documents like Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), Advance Care Planning (ACP) and Advance Medical Directive (AMD). Knowing the differences between these can help prevent conflicts in the future.

3. Budgeting for Wellness and More

Investing in your well-being during perimenopause goes beyond just self-care. It’s about supporting your emotional, physical, and mental health. Set aside money not only for daily living expenses but also for health supplements, fitness classes, personal trainers, and mental health support if needed (like therapy or counseling).

Empowered Women Turn Challenges into Opportunities

Perimenopause isn’t just about navigating change; it’s a chance to reassess your goals, prioritize self-care, and secure a better future for yourself and your family. With the right mindset and tools, turning this phase into a positive experience is possible.

As you focus on your health and well-being, remember to keep your financial health in check, too. Upgrading your CareShield Life plan or budgeting for wellness activities allows you to take care of yourself without the worry of financial strain.
